Cheaply thrilled for a good price

Cheap Thrills Movie Review Its been a while since i have reviewed a film, Partially due to my re addiction to dragon ball z and partially because there are no movies other than captain America that are worth seeing at this moment in time. But i came across a small gem of a movie A scheming couple put a struggling family man and his old friend through a series of increasingly twisted dares over the course of an evening at a local bar. These dares escalate and become more and more intense This movie is aimed at being a black comedy but becomes more of a thriller movie in the long run. And is well worth a watch especially for how intense it becomes halfway through the film Some great acting performances from some actors you barely know (Pat Healy, Ethan Embry, Sara Paxton, David Koechner) A dark an gritty backdrop with lots of moral compass story thrown in for good measure this film is well worth the time to watch My rating for this movie 6 out of 10 ps i have never cringed so much in my entire life

compelling action movie that actually appeals to our intelligence

If you want to know how bad 2013 was, take a peek at the top 250 list and find out how many of them were made on that year. As of 01/10/2013 (dd/mm/yyyy - just to clarify) this number is a staggering 0. It's too early to determine whether 2013 was a great year for the accountants of Hollywood but it sure was a dreadful (pending "Gravity") for its pantheon. On the positive note, 2013 could be the onset of a very promising director named Jeremy Saulnier and the beginning of a new genre: the multiple-twist movies. The plot seems pretty straight forward at first. Dwight (Macon Blair) is a homeless man living on the outskirts of an amusement park. One day he finds that his longtime nemesis (for reasons revealed later on in the film) is about to be released from prison. Clearly, Dwight has no intention to turn the other cheek in this case and he sets out to a successful assassination. After committing his first criminal act (and certainly not the last) Dwight moves in with his Burgois sister and her kids and finds out his brutal, bloody and terribly conspicuous revenge is left unreported because the victim's grieving family is gearing up for an act of apocalyptic vengeance. Dwight is left with no choice but to accept the challenge. Remember in the Matrix the big spoiler appears mid film? Or how the gigantic spoiler is close to the finale at "The sixth sense"? This movie is an installation of successive twists and I have to say it's a very effective way to keep the viewer glued to his seat. Saulnier's writing or casting are commendable but not revolutionary but it's the movie's pacing that distinguish him from the multitude of rookie directors with affordable cameras and editing software. You could argue as to the integrity of some characters in the movie or even question how imperative they are to the plot but when the movie is layered through and Dwight's vigilante act appears more and more like a fatal judgment error, a profound experience happens and the viewer's empathy of the main protagonist wanes down. In a highly unusual introduction at the Haifa film festival, a festival's representative stated that Saulnier could the next Tarantino if he plays his cards right. Saulnier vision of crime drama with moral issues is in fact a breath of fresh air in a stagnant Ganre and one can forgive the lackluster performance of Macon Blair or even look the other way with some character development issues. These issues don't subtract the film's appeal but they do make the comparison between the directors premature to say the least.

I for one, thought that analogy is slightly optimistic. Tarantino took the action Ganre and added complex narrative and time maneuvering (Most notably in Pulp fiction but also at Reservoir dogs). The director doesn't rock the revenge saga in such a manner but he might be a good shot of making 2014 a much better movie year than 2013 was. This movie is worth seeing and despite its modest budget, doesn't seem shoddy or awkwardly delivered. I won't risk predicting that Saulnier will be a household name in the future but I can safely foresee that although this review (thanks for reading it) may be chronologically first on IMDb, it won't be the last

Screenwriter David Sumner travels with his wife Amy in his Jaguar to her homeland Blackwater, in the Mississippi. Amy was the sweetheart of Charlie when she lived there and neither him nor his crew show respect to her. Charlie invites David to hunt deers with his group and him but they leave David alone in the woods and rape Amy. She does not tell to David what happened but when the drunken coach Tom Heddon calls Charlie and his friends to hunt down the slow Jeremy Niles that likes his daughter, David decides to protect not only Jeremy, but also Amy and his honor.

What are You Capable of?

Greetings again from the darkness. If you have seen Sam Peckinpah's classic 1971 original with Dustin Hoffman and Susan George, it is impossible to watch this remake without comparing the two films. Because of that, these comments will include some comparative notes. After all, it's been 40 years and most people watching this new version have never seen the original.

Director Rod Lurie follows the Peckinpah version pretty closely with the obvious changes being a move from the English countryside to the deep south (Mississippi), and the main characters are now a screenwriter and actress instead of mathematical whiz and ... well, whatever Susan George's character was in the original. Those are the obvious changes, but not the most significant. I really missed the subtlety and psychological trickery delivered by Peckinpah, especially in the relationship between David and Amy.

Lurie chooses to take advantage of the physical screen presence of Alexander Skarsgard (True Blood) as Charlie, the local stud and Amy's ex. Charlie's past exploits on the football field and his creepy leadership skills with his posse of thugs, provide the yin of physical strength to the yang of David's intelligence. It's interesting to note that this version spells out Sun-Tzu's description of "straw dogs" while Peckinpah left his audience to fend for themselves. But, of course, what this boils down to is just how far can a civilized person be pushed ... and how far is the bully willing to go?

James Woods is a welcome and terrifying addition to the new version. Since it is based in the small town south, high school football must play a role. Woods is the former high school coach who is now a violent drunk, and still leader of his former players. He is a sadistic type who picks on Jeremy Niles (Dominic Purcell), the slow-witted brother of Daniel (Walton Goggins) and constantly accuses him of inappropriate behavior with his 15 year old cheerleader daughter.

James Marsden (Hairspray) and Kate Bosworth (Remember the Titans) play David and Amy. They come back to Amy's childhood home so she can rest and David can have some peace and quiet while writing his screenplay on the Battle of Stalingrad. Well, we couldn't really have him writing a rom-com, could we? From Day One, the peace and quiet is clearly missing and Lynyrd Skynyrd wins out over Bach in the battle of radio volume. Tension builds and David is tested daily over what it means to be a man ... tested by the local hicks and doubted by his lovely wife.

Things turn from bad to worse when the locals invite David to go hunting with them. What happens with Charlie and Amy during this time changes everything. This sequence was the key to the controversy of the original and what caused it to be banned in many cities and countries. Lurie chooses to handle it in a very straightforward manner - plus, times and mores have changed quite a bit in the last 40 years.

For me, the Peckinpah original remains a classic film with brilliant psychological undertones which left me feeling very uncomfortable and questioning what I might do in this situation. Lurie's new version offered little of that but does work fine as a straightforward suspenseful thriller.

Absurd motives in a realistic setting

I just left the Eye cinema in Amsterdam in dubious, yet better mood than I came in. Borgman managed to touch a part of my passion for film that has rarely been touched before. The atmosphere of this film reminded me of Mikkelsen's 'Jagten'.

What I believe is great about Borgman is that the settings are all realistic, but the motives of the characters are perfectly absurd. That made it nearly impossible to predict what was going to happen and kept me deeply involved throughout the story.

There is a lot of humor hidden behind the sadism in this film. This makes the film a bit less heavy to watch and I guess that's what makes it more appealing to a lot of people. In my opinion, Borgman would have been a great success with or without the exaggerated sadism.

It's the absurd behaviors and realistic way that they are portrayed that carry this film.

Shining, shocking dark comedy in the Hitchcock mold

Writer William Goldman and director Rob Reiner do Hitchcock proud with this one. It has all the elements: a seemingly innocent place and situation invaded by a growing sense of sinister dread until a breathtaking climax. The intelligent script is peppered with moments that will either make you cringe or make you laugh, depending on how morbid your sense of humor is. It is a harrowing movie to watch the first time around. The crew has done a good job of making you feel Paul Sheldon's pain. Few films torture the audience like this one. In fact, I venture to say this is the best film of its kind since "Psycho" thirty years earlier.

The acting is good all-round. Farnsworth steals every scene he's in with his sardonic and relentless sheriff - he did not get enough accolades for what would have been a routine part in a lesser actor's hands. Caan is solid and underplays beautifully, and the inimitable Kathy Bates carries the film with her alternately hysterical or ridiculously-sappy Annie, the psychotic Sheldon fan. Her performance is a throwback to Hollywood's old days - it's not subtle, not quiet, and borders on over-acting. This is not method acting, this is showing off. But Bates makes it work, investing Annie with enough pitifulness to make the character complex and, thus, hold the role together. This movie is famous, of course, for making Kathy Bates an overnight sensation as everybody went into the movie wanting to see what Sonny Corleone looked like as an older man, but left with accolades for Kathy Bates on their lips. She is absolutely terrifying and unforgettable in this role and perfect for it.

Brilliant performance that elevated a 7-star thriller to 9-10 classic status.

Kept My Attention

This film has merits and problems, both, but in the end, it keeps your attention and makes you care about the characters and how the story is going to end.

The acting is pretty solid and the pace is lean and appropriate.

So it succeeds at a basic level.

AND the subject matter is thought-provoking. This reviewer found himself looking at situations and behaviour with a keen eye toward subtext and meaning. I can't say more without spoiling it.

As other reviewers have said, this is best viewed with a minimal or no previous understanding of the plot. Just enjoy the ride.

You might be "crazy" about this movie

I'll start off with something positive: all of the performances in "The Moment" were quite good. The casting was really spot-on, and all the actors performed admirably. Jennifer Jason Lee does a great job capturing the essence of a woman completely detached from reality. Beyond that, I couldn't find anything I liked about this movie, starting with the extreme shaky-cam throughout (was this movie shot from a canoe?) to the awkward, mumbling lost-soul characters, the too- close close-ups, constant loss of focus, the confusing time-jumps forward and back and around again, and the dialogue that just never rang true for me. If I saw that refrigerator butter dish one more time I was going to scream. I couldn't help but wonder "Who put up money for this?" At the after-party at the Tribeca Film Festival, the crowd was quiet and polite during the Q&A, and the only audience question was from someone curious about the therapist scenes. That's a clue. In the unofficial poll I conducted among people I spoke with at the party, the only folks who liked the movie were either psych patients or psychology students. So I guess the bottom line is, if you're crazy, you'll love this movie.

"Counselor, Come Out! Come Out! Wherever You Are!"

Robert De Niro is one of those actors that just melts into a role. His performance as rapist, convict, and all-around not-a-very-nice fellow Max Cady is certainly one of his most memorable performances for its stamina, strength, and excessiveness. The film by Martin Scorsece is a remake of the classic film starring Robert Mitchum and Gregory Peck. Although Scorsece keeps the spirit of the film intact, he does make some very modern changes. He changes the role of Sam Bowden and family from one of harmony to dysfunction. No character is the epitome of a universal good, but rather flawed(very flawed) goodness. Nick Nolte does a fine job as Bowden and Jessica Lange and Juliette Lewis both give deep, emotional performances. The film is really a sea of emotion...most of that emotion being fear. Scorsece adds some arty touches with the camera, but it is his gritty style that really dominates the film's impact. Scorsece also is ever the protector of film as he gives cameos to Gregory Peck, Robert Mitchum, and Martin Balsam(all in the original film). The other acting standout goes to Joe Don Baker as a hired private investigator. But make no mistake....this is De Niro's film all the way. He has some of the best lines as he harasses the Bowden family, terrorizes the Bowden family, and strips the Bowden family of all civility, pretense, and dignity. This film is definitely a keeper!

Rusty Nail is back on the road again looking to punish injustice at every turn - and this time it's with a group of hotheaded street racers on their way to the Road Rally 1000. As they drive through a desolate shortcut on the way to the race, an encounter with Rusty turns sour and soon he is tracking, teasing and torturing them until the end of the road.

Review :

Much better than the second!

But not as good as the first. This entry finds a group of young people driving cross country on the way to take part in a race in Canada. They make a bad decision and take a detour down a road known for its disproportionate amount of disappearances. Of course we know this is the road traveled by Rusty Nail, the villainous trucker obsessed with both his CB radio and destroying anyone that dares insult him.

Our core group of young people cut off Rusty Nail, played by yet another actor after the previous two entries. Here, it is Ken Kirziner, best known as Jason in Freddy vs. Jason. He's actually pretty good, although not as nearly as great as Ted Levine in the first. And Rusty is a much more present villain here, as we actually see him committing the violent acts that were usually kept off screen in the first movie. And the kills here are unique and genuinely creative, even impressive, especially for a straight-to-DVD flick directed by a guy that makes his living doing cheap sequels to theatrical releases.

I'll also say that the movie is fairly unpredictable and you generally won't know exactly who will die and when. The plot is less impressive, becoming repetitive and unbelievable as it goes. But it cleans up in the action-oriented and impressive finale.

The supporting cast is fair, the effects are pretty solid, and the movie is generally pretty good, if not great. The second movie, which made the dubious decision to try and force Joy Ride into the then popular "torture porn" sub-genre, was pretty terrible. This is actually pretty entertaining. I'd say give it a look. It's not a bad little movie.

Review :

Enjoyable period piece

I agree with an earlier reviewer that this film derives much of its effect from being set in 1962. The period feel is beautifully communicated and the plot needs to work itself out in a world where places like Athens, Crete and Istanbul were not just exotic but isolated, where holidaying Americans would still be surprised and interested to meet other Americans, and people on the run could hope to hide away. The chemistry between the three leads, who are all well played, does lack fizz and there is a clumsy and rather hackneyed third act. But the film is never less than engaging and all the better for not resorting to surprise twists. The music tries too hard to be exciting, almost as if the director thinks the visuals need some extraneous help to keep the audience interested. I think he is wrong - there is enough going on here, including some fine acting and cinematography, to appeal to audiences who like films with substance, a trajectory, and a sound sense of place and time.
